Coping with… Depression

If you have a history of depression and have tried traditional coping methods only to find they don’t work, don’t despair. There are several other things you can do to help yourself cope. Though we don’t advocate ignoring your doctor’s suggestions, we would like to add a few other options which are known to be effective. The following are 5 Tips to help you cope with depression.

1. Exercise
Endorphins, our body’s natural “feel good chemicals,” are released when you exercise. Studies show that people who exercise regularly are more optimistic than people who don’t. You don’t need to become a gym rat in order to see and feel results. Simply taking a twice-daily walk around your neighborhood at a fast pace is enough to get those endorphins rolling.

2. Diet
Foods rich in fat and sugar are known to cause a temporary high. The crash that comes one or two hours later due to your blood sugar regulating, often makes you feel lethargic all over again. This type of yo-yo effect wreaks havoc on your physical and mental state. Instead, choose foods rich in vitamins and nutrients, and drink plenty of water every day.

3. Relaxation
Every day, carve out 30 minutes just for yourself. You don’t have to hit the spa, but do take some time to do something you love. Read a book, take a bubble bath, or just lie in bed and close your eyes. Take up a new hobby, such as yoga, which is known for its relaxing effects.

4. Alternative Medicine
Acupuncture has been shown to have an extremely positive effect on those suffering from depression. If traditional Western medicine has failed to help you in the past, it’s worth your time to try this alternative. Hypnotherapy has also been shown to be similarly effective for many people, and it’s often covered by insurance.

5. Support System
Surround yourself with positive people and you will naturally feel more positive. If your support system is plagued by negativity, you will find it that much harder to pull yourself up. Your family and friends are wonderful resources, but only if they’re willing to pull you up- not keep you down.

Depression is a serious illness, but it doesn’t need to claim the best parts of your life. By following these tips, and your doctor’s advice, you’re sure to keep your body and soul in tip-top shape.
