Coping with… Unemployment and Redundancy

The words ‘unemployment’ and ‘redundancy’ carry many negative associations. And yet they needn’t be as scary as we all think. In fact they might even be great opportunities. Here’s a few short ideas on how to cope and even maximise unemployment and redundancy, should destiny throw them your way.

“Sometimes you have to kind of die inside in order to rise from your own ashes and believe in yourself and love yourself to become a new person.” ? Gerard Way

Sadly, as the recession has deepened, the unemployment rate has risen, but this doesn’t have to dampen your mood. There are many things that can help you cope with unemployment, so don’t feel like your world is coming to a crashing end and give up, because it isn’t.

Job Searching – Set Yourself a Goal

Even though this can get pretty de-motivating if you are unable to find a job, think of it as an opportunity to set a goal and work towards achieving something that can help you better yourself. Your first goal should involve you turning in a certain amount of job applications each month, or perhaps, each week. This should contribute to helping you attain your ultimate goal of actually getting a job so that you can have a source of income.

Find Yourself

This could actually be a chance to discover yourself and find what you truly enjoy. If you have been overworked recently and are now unemployed then you are probably feeling bad because you may (incorrectly) feel worthless and lazy, but this is just because you don’t know what to do with yourself. Instead of just slouching around try to find a new hobby or activity that you enjoy doing. One of the best things that you can do for yourself while you are not feeling good is to exercise, and not just because of the health benefits. Exercise naturally raises a person’s mood, which will make you feel much better. Exercise can also help you with your negative feelings because you will actually be doing something positive. You don’t have to join a gym to get started, maybe go out for a run and see what it does for you.

Broaden Your Mind

How about starting one of those many books you never got round to? Reading broadens the mind and relaxes the soul and will, obviously, take your mind off any bad thoughts that you’re being tormented by. Why not try ‘reading up on’ a completely new subject that always interested you or is way outside your ‘comfort zone’. This could be the start of a new career path or even a new you!

Strengthen Your Relationships

You can take this time of unemployment to get to know some of the people that you once felt close to, but are drifting away from as time has gone on. Talk to these people, and maybe even bring up your depressive feelings that you have been getting recently. They can help you talk things through, and even if you don’t come to an answer just talking about it can definitely improve your overall mood. Talking things through helps a lot of people feel better. Certainly, it can’t hurt to try.

Start Your Own Business

You know what, maybe this is the best thing that’s EVER happened in your life! Why should you be happy selling your soul to someone else and being a wage slave working 9 to 5 very day. Look at the great life style all those business people have! Well now it’s your chance – why not start your own business. Find something that you are, or could be passionate about – find a way of doing it differently to everyone else and give it a go, after all what have you actually got to lose??? One day you’ll look back on this moment and think – ‘why didn’t I do that years ago!?’

Hopefully these methods can help you during this difficult time. Remember, every negative situation has a positive side to it, you just have to find the right perspective and look for it.Don’t give up; this is just the start of you doing something great!

“The phoenix must burn to emerge.” – Janet Fitch

Ryan Bingham (in “Up in the air” as he fires someone): Anybody who ever built an empire, or changed the world, sat where you are now. And it’s because they sat there that they were able to do it.

Old friends pass away, new friends appear. It is just like the days. An old day passes, a new day arrives. The important thing is to make it meaningful: a meaningful friend - or a meaningful day.
