NUMBER 7 – DIET & HONEST TO GOODNESS
WHY IS THIS IN THE TOP 30 LIFE CHANGERS?
We are not vegetarians at Spirit Fountain, but we know, just like the next guy, the importance of good diet in contributing to our sense of wellbeing and health. This cannot be overstressed. There’s plenty of things we can do to eat more healthily, eat more fruit, more vegetables, eat less more often, drink lots of water etc., etc.
Honest to Goodness embodies in one DVD all of these values. It is not a vegetarian cooking DVD, instead it describes itself as ‘Meat-free cooking’. More importantly, all the recipes included have one thing in common first and foremost, healthy eating.
AIM OF THE DVD
Penny Harry prefers to not to refer to her recipes as Vegetarian, but instead as ‘Meat-free dishes’. However you label them the aim of these DVD is to present 14 healthy recipes in a disarmingly relaxed and humble fashion.
The claim here is that an unflinching meat eater won’t even be able to tell, in many cases, that they’re not even eating meat! There are starters, main courses of all kinds and a whole sub-menu full of fantastic deserts, with a full break down of the contents at the beginning of each episode.
THE AUTHOR
Desperate to vanquish the myths that vegetarian food is boring, Penny Harris started running a meat-free cookery course in England several years ago. Demand was so great the only way she could satisfy it was by recording her Honest to Goodness DVD. But the cooking and recipes are part of a wider quest for healthier living, something of which she is a big advocate.
IS IT ANY GOOD
In a era of fast-food, fast-fixes and quick solutions this DVD stands out. It’s not the quick turn around, ‘here’s one I made earlier’ kind of fare you might find yourself watching on a Saturday morning. Instead it has a gentle, ‘warm’ and very unpretentious way about it. It’s almost as if harris hasn’t noticed that there are cameras on her, or if she has she’s embarrassed that they are there. Whatever, the style, once you’ve got used to it is very engaging and likeable.?Her bubbly side-kick is on hand, if for no other reason than to drink her kitchen dry and throw in the odd wise-crack (usually at the expense of men as a whole).
As for the dishes, I’ve tried several and they are amazing. Harris really does prove that healthy doesn’t have to be dull or unexpressive, and that, if for no other reason is why this DVD gets itself a big thumbs up.
