The Power of… Time

What is the most valuable thing you take for granted in your life? You probably thought about that question for a second and then answered with something about money, your spouse or your job. The real answer is much simpler. It is your time.

Your Room Here on Earth Most of us spend hours on end in front of our computers and televisions. Rest and relaxation are extremely important for our bodies and minds. There is no doubt about that, but our souls need the satisfaction gained from servicing others. If you feel like your life is lacking purpose, give your time to someone that really needs it instead of pouring into the television. Wherever you turn, you will find someone that can use the most valuable gift you have to give. You don’t have to donate money or do fundraising to help those around you. All you have to do is give them your time. No matter how hard you try, you can’t get time back. The hours go on with no way to stop them. That is why it’s important to try to use some of them constructively while you still have the chance. I Don’t Have Enough Time to Give to Others Many people give this excuse, but that is only because they feel like donating their time will be burdensome. It is important to attempt to change that attitude for yourself. Viewing volunteering your time as a gift you receive rather than a burden is the first step towards personal fulfillment. Many of us feel like our lives are aimless. We work unfulfilling jobs and come home to a sink full of dirty dishes and more bills to pay. Servicing others for any amount of time can give your life new purpose. You don’t even have to do it daily. Only a few hours a month can drastically change the lives of others and give you a feeling of accomplishment. I Don’t Know Where My Time Would Be the Most Helpful If you don’t know what organizations would benefit from your talents, start with people you already know. Is a friend of yours in a bad relationship? Does your child have a friend at school whose family is going through a rough time financially? Open your home to these people and offer them a meal and companionship. You don’t have to look far to find someone that needs your help. They are all around you. Remember, the most valuable gift you can give someone is your time.
